Avaita Way, Natural Bridge
PAUL ROBERTSON ARCHITECT
GOLD COAST AND NORTHERN RIVERS ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS – HOUSE OF THE YEAR 2012
A modern residence in Queensland’s Natural Bridge that balances refined luxury, sustainability and bold thinking. This house achieves sustainable design in ways that are not only particular to residential projects, but adaptable to other building typologies. The key element is a composition of dual skins – one glass and one a semi-permeable layer of mesh screening. With no air conditioning and several specific ESD initiatives, this approach exhibits sound sustainability principles. Commercial steel portal frame design techniques were utilised to create an exoskeleton that allows for a free-flowing and floating internal layout. The high-level slab on ground construction with large integrated, reinforced and suspended concrete cantilevers sprout from the earth itself to blend perfectly into the beautiful Natural Bridge surroundings.
